Bid Lead Time Incorrect

9021 12 0

I have all my snipes set to be placed at 3 seconds prior to the auction end, but I have noticed over the past two days all snipes are being placed 10 seconds prior to end and have potentially cost my some auctions. Can someone please let me know how to correct this?

Hello Adam,
Thanks for your note. We added an extra 5 as a temporary measure to investigate something, but forgot to change it back. They will fire normally now.
By the way, when items have more than 10 bidders, the win rate for 6 seconds is 5% higher than 3 seconds. It is because of the number of tie situations, for which you want your bid to come in first, but still too soon for people to react.
I hope this helped. If not, please tell me how to reproduce the problem and we can take the next step.

I have had two snipes not placed this week to my knowledge. Here are the eBay item numbers below. Can someone please let me know why my snipes were not placed? Snipes we placed well before the required time limit on each.
Item Number: 116185645152
Item Number: 204787531101

Here's the error eBay returned:
Item Ended Early: Bidding ended early for this item, the Seller most likely changed the duration or canceled the listing. Or, it was sold.

I was watching the listings with minutes left in the auction so I am 99% sure the listings were not ended early. They were both auctions which I believe I would have won, but the snipes were not placed. Is there any other information that can be provided for why the snipes were not placed? I have had multiple issues appear over the past week causing me a lot of frustration with the service. Have you guys been testing out a new update or working out a lot of bugs?

No, there was only the emergency reboot posted in the announcement on Sunday, which is why 204787531101 didn't get scheduled. That was human intervention, though, not a glitch.
204787531101 definitely was executed because we got back this result from multiple snipes: https://paste.pics/66978216732ffccf4e7e6dd6e3d9d10a. The connection to eBay didn't finish until over a minute later. This is why we place multiple bids from multiple locations. If they all return the same result we know the problem was on the eBay side, or a customer account issue. In this case it was the former. Only about 1 in 10,000 does that though.
As with all our competitors, we all state on the home page that the 100% reliability guarantee does not include issues caused by eBay, such as eBay server outages or eBay software updates.
And yes we do make updates but there is a test group that puts it through the ringer first. Soon we will allow changing the bid just a few seconds before closing.

Typo: First sentence should say item 116185645152.

I understand your previous answer, but this issue keeps happening. It has happened at least three times since the last response to my issue. All items are showing to have been sold as a result of an auction ending as scheduled. Here is another item. These auctions are not ending early so there has to be some kind of fix.

Look at your log for that item. We place the bid from multiple locations, and eBay required almost six seconds to process the snipe for each one. Usually it's less than a second. This delay isn't on our end.
There is little to no value for you in using 2 seconds because your items are usually over $100. You have a lot of tie situations and you want your bid to come in earlier due to the bid increment. Try using 5 seconds and you will win more.

How do I review the log for each snipe placed? I am not saying the data does not support a longer lead time, but I have watched plenty of auctions where I have been outbid in the last second or two. Since this seems to be a more regularly occurring issues are you seeing ebay process times slower than usual lately?

Good question. I think this would make a good article so your questions are welcome.
1. HISTOGRAM
I made a histogram (bell curve) of snipes in your categories in the last 3 days:
https://paste.pics/55cfc7fbd832c26a19d2e7ecfcf550df
The X axis is milliseconds. Y axis is how often (Frequency). Notice the average time is around 1.5 seconds, but there are outliers in the 6-8 second range. But we fire 2 or more snipes for premium customers.
2. PADDING TIME
All snipe service have to deal with this, but it really does not matter how much we pad the snipe. But in that case we would pad 1 + 1.5 = 2.5 seconds.
3. IS THERE VALUE IN 1 or 2 SECOND SNIPES?
Yes, but there is a tradeoff. We were the first service to publish an "upgrade" for a 3-second lead time, and then the competitors copied it. There is definitely value in it, as the overall win rates are about 10% higher. But this could be for a number of reasons.
4. RECOMMENDATION?
I always use 6-7 seconds because my items are highly competitive, and I want my bid first.
So in summary, the overall site-wide advantage to using 1-2 seconds is about 10%. But FOR HIGHLY COMPETITIVE ITEMS, the odds of being beaten in a tie are greater. So I use 6-7.
Does this help?
